Treatments · Knee
When arthritis is limited to one part of the knee, a partial replacement may be enough. Not everyone is a candidate. Imaging and an exam decide, not this page. Whether a robot is used is decided in clinic.

Who it may fit
AAOS patient education describes this as a shared decision — not a decision based on age alone. Ligaments have to be suitable. Pain in more than one part of the knee often points to a total knee instead. Many people still need a total.
Discussed when arthritis is limited to one compartment and the rest of the joint is suitable.
X-rays, and sometimes other studies, show the joint. This page cannot tell you that you qualify.
Whether a partial knee is done with robotic-arm assistance is decided in clinic. The surgeon still operates.
Activity, therapy, medicines, and injections. See conservative care.
The procedure
Metal and a medical-grade plastic spacer take the place of the worn surfaces in that part of the knee. The rest of the joint is kept. Results vary.
Not a total kneeA partial is an implant choice, not a guarantee of less pain or a faster calendar than a total. If a total is the honest operation, that is the conversation.
Decided in clinicStand and walk when medically ready. Same-day discharge only when appropriate. Written milestones match your surgery. See outpatient joint replacement.
Opioid-sparing, not opioid-freeQuestions
Only the worn part of the knee is resurfaced. The rest of the joint is kept. It is discussed when arthritis is limited to one compartment and the ligaments are suitable.
Not everyone. Imaging and a full exam decide. Many people still need a total knee. This page cannot assign a diagnosis.
Whether a partial knee is done with the robot is decided case by case.
Some patients do, when medical and home factors line up. Others stay overnight. Same-day discharge is a selected pathway, not a default.
No. Care is designed to reduce opioid use. Some people still need a short course of opioid medicine.
